Ring Camera Not Detecting Motion (Causes and Solutions)

Last updated on April 13th, 2024

Ring cameras are a reliable method for surveillance around your home. They give you 24×7 access to the live feed, take pictures at timely intervals, and record videos when they detect motion.

However, some users have reported a sudden change in their Ring security system. If you aren’t receiving motion alerts or newly recorded videos aren’t available, then the issue is the Ring camera not detecting motion. Why does that happen? What should you do to fix it? Let’s find out.

But before that, let’s understand how motion detection works in Ring cameras.

How does the Ring camera detect motion?

Ring cameras use a PIR motion detection sensor. It receives Infrared signals from the surroundings to detect motion. It also detects the change in heat energy in the surroundings. A human or an animal has more or less body heat than the surrounding temperature, and they step in front of the camera.

In that case, motion detection will be activated, and the camera will start recording video. Unlike 24×7 surveillance cameras, these cameras do not record videos continuously. They record only when they detect motion.

Note: These cameras have a motion detection range of 30 feet, which means any motion beyond 30 feet from their position will not be recorded.

Now, let’s see why you have a Ring camera not detecting motion issues and how you can fix it.

Cause 1: Motion Detection is turned off

To record videos using your cam, you need to keep the Motion Detection feature turned on. If it is turned off, the camera won’t record videos even if the motion sensor is triggered.

To turn on Motion Detection, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the Ring app and go to the ‘Main Menu’.

Step 2: Go to ‘Devices’ and select the device you want.

Step 3: Turn on the toggle switch beside ‘Motion Detection’.

This will enable the feature, and your camera will start recording.

Cause 2: Motion Sensitivity is low

Motion sensitivity is the measure of the detection limit of your camera. The higher the sensitivity better the motion detection. If you keep it too low, it could miss some of the important motion triggers. So you need to keep it high.

To increase motion sensitivity:

Step 1: Open the Ring app and go to the ‘Main Menu’.

Step 2: Go to ‘Devices’ and select the device you want.

Step 3: Go to ‘Settings’ and then select ‘Motion Settings’.

Step 4: Open the ‘Motion Sensitivity’ tile and slide the sensitivity slider towards your right.

This will increase the sensitivity of your camera, and that will promote better motion detection.

Cause 3: Motion Snooze is turned on

Ring app has a special feature called Motion Snooze, where you can disable the motion alerts for a set period of time. The videos will be recorded, but you won’t be notified until the snooze feature is off. So you might think that your cam is not recording videos.

To check if Motion Snooze is turned on for your cam, do this:

Step 1: Open the Ring app and go to the ‘Main Menu’.

Step 2: Go to ‘Devices’ and select the device you want.

Step 3: If you see a crescent moon icon near your device name, the Snooze feature is on.

You can click on the ‘End Snooze’ button to disable this feature, and then you’ll receive updates like usual. Or you can leave it on for the selected period of time.

Cause 4: Motion Zones are disabled (Privacy Zones are enabled)

Ring lets you set Motion Zones for your device where the device will record only in those particular zones. All the other areas in the cam’s view will not be recorded. If an activity takes place in the areas that are not set as Motion Zones, then it will not be recorded. You can enable these zones from the app.

Step 1: Open the Ring app and go to the ‘Main Menu’.

Step 2: Go to ‘Devices’ and select the device you want.

Step 3: Go to ‘Settings’ and select ‘Motion Settings’.

Step 4: Click on ‘Camera Motion Zones’ and then on ‘Edit Zones’.

Step 5: Tap on the ‘Add Zone’ button and select a new area to add a new motion zone.

So all the areas that your previous video recording missed will be covered from now on. Don’t forget to save the settings.

Cause 5: Motion Schedule is active

You can set a Motion Schedule to arm or disarm your security camera. At the selected time, the cam will automatically get armed or disarmed based on what you have selected.

If an activity takes place in the period that your cam is set to be Disarmed, video won’t be recorded. You can delete the entire schedule or disable a specific part of the schedule to start recording again immediately.

Cause 6: Live view is open on another device

Ring app allows you to view the live feed from the cam. Sometimes, when you have live view open on one device, the second device doesn’t receive motion alerts. This could lead you to believe that the cam is not recording videos.

This issue is mostly found with users using multiple devices to monitor their security system. To prevent this from happening, make sure you exit the live view after you are done watching. Exiting the live feed quickly also preserves the battery life of your camera.

Cause 7: Motion alerts are turned off

Motion Alerts are notifications that you receive from the Ring app when your device detects motion. These alerts are vital so that you instantly receive updates when someone has entered the area where no one is supposed to be. You can turn on Motion Alerts by following the steps below.

Step 1: Open the Ring app and go to the ‘Main Menu’.

Step 2: Go to ‘Devices’ and select the device you want.

Step 3: Turn on the toggle switch beside ‘Motion Alerts’.

There could be a case, where the ring camera may detect the motion, but might not record. For this, you can refer to our guide to fix the not-recording issue.
