Blink Outdoor Camera Setup: A Step-by-Step Guide

Last updated on April 13th, 2024

You got a brand new Blink device, and now you want to set it up. Many users find this to be the trickiest part. Because you have to ensure everything is in place before you start the actual procedure. And you have to do it accurately. Don’t worry. We are going to make it easy for you.

To set up an outdoor or indoor Blink camera, you first need to create an account and add the Sync Module to that account. Then, you can add your camera to the app by simply entering its serial number. You’ll also need to add it to the same system as the Sync device.

There are three vital steps to set up a Blink camera. Those are:

  1. Creating a Blink account
  2. Setting up a Sync Module
  3. Connecting Blink camera to Wi-Fi

We will discuss all these steps in detail in the following sections.

First, download and install the Home Monitor app on your phone from the Play Store or Apple Store. Once successful, you have to create an account on the app. You’ll use this account to control all your devices from a single place. For that, you have to

Step 1: Tap on ‘Create Account’ at the bottom of the login page.

Step 2: You’ll be asked to select your country. Select one from the drop-down menu. And click on ‘Next.’

Step 3: Now, your region will be automatically selected by the system based on your IP address. You just have to confirm it by clicking on ‘OK.’

If the region that pops up is not the one you want to select, you can also select one manually from the dropdown list.

Step 4: Now, you’ll be asked to enter your email address. Enter the correct email address and then tap on ‘Next.’

Step 5: Set a password according to the requirements listed on the page and create your account.

Once the account is created, you’ll need to complete the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) process. Just follow the on-screen instructions, and you’ll be good to go. Now that the account setup is complete, you should move on to setting up the Sync Module.

Set up the Sync Module

You cannot set up the cam, without setting up The Sync Module first. So, while you have your app open, get to it.

Step 1: On the home screen, tap on the ‘+’ icon to add a new device.

Step 2: You’ll be shown a list of different Blink devices. From the list, you have to select Sync Module.

Step 3: Now, you have to enter your device’s serial number to connect it. For that, you have two options.

1. Enter the serial number manually

2. Scan the QR code on the back of the module.

Both the serial number and the QR code are located at the back of the cam on the same label. Scanning the code is easier than typing it manually. But the second option is given just in case you are not able to scan the code.

Step 4: If the serial number is recognized by the app, you’ll be asked to create a new system or choose from the existing ones. Considering this is your first time setting up a Blink camera, you won’t have any previous systems. So, just create a new one and name it. Tap ‘Continue’ once done.

Step 5: The app will now prompt you to plug in your Sync device into a power source. Once you do that, you should see a solid green light and a blinking blue light. If you don’t see the blue light, click on ‘Help’; otherwise, move on to ‘Discover Device.’

Step 6: Now, connect your device to the module’s local Wi-Fi network. The Wi-Fi will be named ‘BLINK-XXXX,’ where XXXX are the last 4 digits of your serial number.

Step 7: Once this is done, you’ll be shown a list of available home Wi-Fi networks. Select yours and enter the correct password.

Step 8: Complete the process by tapping on ‘Done’ on the Finish page.

Now, your module is connected to the app, and you’ll see the connection icon at the top of your home screen. Now that you have created an account and added the Sync Module, you can move on to connecting the Blink camera to Wi-Fi.

Setting up the camera involves connecting it to Wi-Fi. You can use them without Wi-Fi later if you have a Sync Module, but Wi-Fi is absolutely necessary for the setup process. Here’s a step-by-step instruction on how to do it.

Step 1: On the app’s home screen, tap on the ‘+’ icon.

Step 2: From the given list, select the type of camera you want to set up.

Step 3: Now, you have to enter the cam’s serial number. Enter it manually or by scanning the QR code on the back of the device.

Step 4: Now, select the system that you added while setting up the Sync Module and add your camera to this system.

Step 5: Once this is done, you’ll be shown a success screen. Tap on ‘Next’ in the top right corner.

Your camera is now successfully set up. You can even edit its name by tapping on the cam’s serial number. You are now free to mount it in its position. And when the first device is set up, you can add more.

Mounting the camera

The first step in mounting a Blink camera is to select a location. Choose a spot that’s usually kept undisturbed and gives a good angle of the area you want to cover. Each type of device has a different mounting requirement. We have covered the exact steps and guidelines in a detailed guide. The mounting part is pretty simple if you have gone through the installation process.

If you haven’t purchased a Sync Module, you can still set up Blink camera outdoor. For that, skip the step where you set up the Blink Sync Module and directly connect the device to Wi-Fi. You will need to create a system if you want to install and set up multiple Blink devices from this app. Just follow the on-screen instructions, and you will be fine.

But if you don’t have a Sync Module, you need to buy a Blink Subscription to save the recorded videos. There are multiple plans you can choose from based on how many devices you have and what features you want to use.

You can add up to 10 devices to a single system. So, counting the cameras that you already added, you can add nine more to the same system and Sync Module. The procedure for that is the same as above.

Step 1: Add a new device by tapping on the ‘+’ icon.

Step 2: Select the type of camera.

Step 3: Enter the serial number/Scan the QR code.

Step 4: Select the system.

But if you want to add more than ten cameras, you’ll have to create a new system. You’ll also need to buy a second Sync Module. The account remains the same, and you add the second module the way you did the first and create a second system with a different name. While adding more cameras, select the new system. After adding all the devices, you can move on to set up your custom preferences.

Setup custom app preferences

You can control how your cameras operate and how they record with the Blink Home Monitor app. Let’s look at a few of the customization options.

  • Motion Sensitivity: You can set the motion sensitivity of your device from 0 to 10, with 0 being the least sensitive and 10 being the most sensitive. The more sensitivity, the more easily motion will be detected.
  • Video Length: When triggered with motion, you can choose how long the cam records for. It can be set for 5 to 60 seconds.
  • Retrigger Time: This is the time interval that passes between two recordings. The higher you set it, the more time will go unrecorded. It has to be at least 10 seconds and can be extended up to 60 seconds.
  • Privacy Zones: If you wish a certain part of the view should not be recorded, then you can set up a privacy zone for that region. Simply draw a rectangle on the region and adjust its size. You can add up to 2 privacy zones on a single view.

Tips to ensure a smooth setup

To make sure that you have a smooth setup experience with your Blink Camera, take care that:

  • You are using the latest version of the Blink app. Otherwise, it might interrupt the process.
  • How many times have to misspelled your own name? Don’t do that here, and enter the correct email address without spelling mistakes.
  • Insert the Sync Module and wired cameras into appropriate power outlets that don’t fluctuate.
  • The Wi-Fi should be on and have good speed while pairing the devices.
  • Make sure you enter the correct Wi-Fi password to your local network.

With all of this checked off your list, you should have a smooth setup process. Once the software part is done, you can set the camera in its location.

Conclusion

We hope we have told you how to set up the Blink camera with and without the Sync Module. The process is a bit lengthy, but the steps are easy to follow.
